Panorama Route, Kruger National Park, Ponta Do Oura, Tembe, Sodwana Bay & St Lucia

Day 1, Night 1 - Johannesburg to Panorama Route

Meet and greet at place of residence in Johannesburg or at the international airport by Alan Tours. We board the tour vehicle and depart for the Mpumalanga (“The place where the sun rises”) Panorama Route taking in the scenery which becomes more picturesque as we approach the escarpment that finally descends towards the low laying country known as the Lowveld.

We use what time we have to explore some of the places of interest on the Panorama Route before checking into our historic accommodation or similar, on or near the pass that descends the escarpment of the Drakensberg and enter what is known as the Panorama Route.

Freshen up and meet in the spacious dining area for a delicious dinner before making our way to your comfortable accommodation and a peaceful night’s rest.

Day 2, Night 2 - Panorama Route to Kruger National Park

Meet for a hearty breakfast before checking out and set off to descend to the warm lowlands below the escarpment. We travel through orchards of tropical fruit before driving through increasing numbers of privately owned nature and game reserves as we make our way to the entrance gate of the mighty Kruger National Park, the oldest and largest park in South Africa.

As we enter the park, we stop to check in and take a comfort break, before immediately starting our game viewing experience. We travel through the park towards our overnight accommodation at one of the southern camps, an area known for its abundance of wildlife and excellent Lion sightings.

On arrival at our overnight accommodation, we check in before boarding the tour vehicle for the late afternoon drive searching for the many animals, reptiles and birds in this magnificent National Park. The early evening is one of the best times to view the creatures of the park, when they start becoming more active in their never ending search for food and water.

We return to our rest camp for the evening meal at the camp restaurant. This is a great time to relax on your porch and enjoy the peace and quiet of the evening while listening to the sounds of the African night, the nocturnal creatures: the Fruit bats with their metallic clicking as they fly silently between the fruiting trees; the Black backed Jackal calling in defense of its territory; the low hoot of the Eagle owl or the chirpy call of the smaller Scopes Owl sitting in the trees above. The far off call of the Spotted Hyena or if you’re in luck, the deep bass of a pride of lions roaring in the dark will keep you entertained, until eyes heavy with sleep, you fall into a deep satisfying sleep.

Overnight Kruger National Park, bed and breakfast

Lunch and dinner are for own account

Optional extra: Night game drive in the park’s vehicle.

Day 3, Night 3 - Full Day Kruger National Park

We wake early for a fresh cup of coffee and a “Rusk”, a traditional oven baked bread roll as we get an early start driving into the savannas, searching for the many sightings, with some of the animals coming to the end of their nocturnal wanderings, while others awakening to the new day, feeding and interacting with the world around them. We continuously stop to view sightings such as Elephant, Lion, Buffalo and Hippo, Giraffe, Zebra and many others including a wide variety of birds, reptiles and insects that will keep you fascinated for hours, in the stunning scenery in which they live.

At midmorning we have the choice of returning to our rest camp or continuing with the days game drive after a hearty breakfast at another camp.

If we continue with our game drive, we enjoy a light lunch on the road before returning to our rest camp to freshen up while Alan Tours prepares a traditional braai (barbecue) on the open wood fire under evening star-lit skies in this African wonderland. We finally make our way to bed, lulled to sleep by the sounds of the wild.

Day 5, Night 5 - Kruger National Park to Seaside Village in Mozambique

After waking early for a fresh cup of coffee and rusks, we prepare to leave our rest camp, and the Kruger National Park, game viewing on our way out of this magnificent wildlife refuge.

We need to get to the busy border post in good time to avoid the queue at the border, breakfast en route. After completing the border formalities, we continue towards the bustling city and capital of Mozambique, Maputo. Turning south, as we enter Maputo, we drive over a gigantic new bridge spanning a wide lagoon as we make our way to our overnight destination in a vibrant coastal town where we check into our neat reed cabanas set in serene gardens.

There are many activities to choose from where their specialty is scuba diving and snorkeling in the protected bay of Ponta Do Ouro, the “Point of Gold”. Seasonal Humpback Whales, Sharks, Rays and a multitude of sea life can all be seen when diving in this popular dive destination. Swimming with wild Dolphins is a popular activity based in this busy town.

After we check in, we choose what kind of activity we would like to do:

  • During the season join a 4 x 4 vehicle to drive to the beach at night to find Turtles coming up onto the beach to lay their eggs.
  • Take a early morning or late afternoon guided walk in the palm forest
  • A guided canoe trip on the lake bird watching while dodging the local groups of hippos
  • If time allows take a guide drive in a 4 x 4 vehicle to the mouth of the lake system where one gets to view the traditional fish traps that are constructed in the water and used by the local Tonga people to catch fish for their families
  • Or you could simply choose to chill in your comfortable lodge taking in the local wildlife from your chalet.

On our return we take a hearty breakfast before checking out and continue through the rural countryside as we make our way to a beautiful game reserve set aside to protect some of Africa’s largest Elephant tuskers and the many other creatures in the reserve. This game reserve is part owned /part run by members of the local Tembe nation. It is in this unique sand forest habitat, which is found stretching between northern South Africa and southern Mozambique, where special protection is given, not only to the elephants but also other members of the Big 5 and the many beautiful birds, reptiles and other forest mammals that find protection here, on these deep sands where we find colossal, wide spreading trees that seem to dwarf these huge Elephants.

We check into our spacious, permanent tented, accommodation with well-appointed en suite bathrooms and special outside showers, each set under the wide, enveloping canopy of a giant forest tree. We take our lunch at the restaurant in the camp.

In the early afternoon we meet our ranger in the open 4 x 4 game drive vehicle for the afternoon / early evening game drive in search of the mystical giants and so much more in the forest that is interspersed with extensive grassy seep lines.

We check into our comfortable overnight accommodation and prepare for the afternoon activities. Here we choose from scuba diving to a 4 x 4 guided beach safari searching for seasonal (November to March) nesting turtles or the hatching of baby turtle as they clamber over the beach in a desperate attempt to reach the ocean and safety.
